Cervical & Lumbar Spondylosis

Cervical and lumbar spondylosis are common degenerative conditions affecting the spine due to aging, wear and tear, or long-term strain. These changes can cause neck pain, lower back pain, nerve compression, and reduced mobility. When conservative treatments fail to relieve symptoms, modern minimally invasive spine surgery, including endoscopic and robotic-assisted techniques, can provide effective treatment with faster recovery and minimal tissue damage.

What Is Spondylosis?

Spondylosis refers to age-related degeneration of the spine, including disc wear, bone spur formation, and joint changes. These structural changes can narrow the spaces through which nerves pass, leading to pain and neurological symptoms.

Types of Spondylosis

  • Cervical Spondylosis – Degenerative changes in the neck region that may cause neck stiffness, arm pain, or numbness.
  • Lumbar Spondylosis – Degeneration in the lower back leading to back pain, leg pain, or sciatica.

Common Symptoms

  • Chronic neck or lower back pain
  • Stiffness and reduced flexibility
  • Numbness or tingling in arms or legs
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pain radiating to shoulders, arms, hips, or legs

When Surgery May Be Required

Most patients benefit from non-surgical treatments such as medications, physiotherapy, and lifestyle changes. However, if nerve compression persists and causes severe pain, weakness, or mobility issues, minimally invasive spine surgery may be recommended.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Minimally invasive techniques allow surgeons to treat degenerative spine conditions using small incisions and advanced technology. These procedures reduce trauma to surrounding muscles and enable quicker recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

Advanced Treatment Techniques

  • Endoscopic Spine Surgery – A tiny camera and specialized instruments are used to remove bone spurs or disc material compressing nerves.
  • Robotic-Assisted Spine Surgery – Robotic guidance enhances surgical accuracy during spinal decompression or stabilization procedures.
  • Minimally Invasive Decompression – Removes structures causing nerve pressure while preserving healthy tissue.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

  • Smaller surgical incisions
  • Minimal muscle and tissue damage
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery and return to daily activities

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves a detailed clinical evaluation along with imaging studies such as MRI scans, CT scans, and X-rays. These tests help identify the extent of spinal degeneration and nerve compression, allowing doctors to plan the most appropriate treatment.

Final Thoughts

Cervical and lumbar spondylosis can significantly affect daily life if left untreated. With modern minimally invasive spine surgery techniques such as endoscopic and robotic-assisted procedures, patients can experience effective pain relief, improved spinal stability, and a quicker return to normal activities.
